Dream Machine is the eighth episode of Season 1. It is the ninth episode of Superjail overall.

Plot[]

The episode begins with Jacknife heading to a strip club titled "Dreamland." While inside the building, he grabs a beer to drink and sits on a chair at a table to watch the strippers. He tries gabbing some cash from one of the strippers’ undies. However, the stripper’s pole starts shaking and Jailbot suddenly appears to grab Jacknife and take off his clothes, even hitting him on the stripper poles to make him strip before grabbing and placing some destroyed objects onto his rear end. Jacknife promptly screams before Jailbot captures him and flies out of the building, destroying the roof, to start taking him over to Superjail, starting up the intro.

The Warden is out at dinner with Alice when he is wakes to find himself in a riot. After he, Alice, Jailbot, and Jared are killed, he wakes up once again. The Warden calls an emergency meeting in the middle of the night, convinced that a riot is about to erupt. To monitor the inmates, he decides to create a Dream Machine to survey the inmate's dreams. After a while, he decides to monitor Alice, Jared, and Jailbot's dreams too. Superjail becomes overcome with insomnia, as the inmates, Jared, and Alice are afraid to fall asleep (due to The Warden's intruding appearances in their dreams). The Twins cause mischief by seeping sleeping gas into the whole prison; everyone, including the Warden, start to dream together. In true Superjail fashion, a bloodbath begins, with The Twins creating havoc through the Dream Machine. It ends with a real-life man dressed as The Warden waking up on a busy street in a pile of beers, so that it appears as if the whole episode was a dream. However, once the man gets up and moves, the camera zooms in on a poster of The Warden's eyes and the statement, "We're watching you."

Trivia[]

  • This episode was originally the third episode of Season 1 to be produced.
  • Turban, "Inmate XA24LXU" from "Superbar", one of the recurring Bored Inmates from "Combaticus", and the recurring Asian inmate with the goatee from the aforementioned "Superbar" and "Terrorarium" can be seen in The Warden's first dream.
  • Jean, one of the Gay Inmates, can be seen among the inmates rushing through the door in The Warden's second dream.
  • Some non-human inmates are shown falling past The Warden in the "falling dream." They include.
    • An inmate with blue fur.
    • A grey inmate with a cube for a head.
    • An inmate with lips and a mouth for a head.
  • Jailbot’s dream is animated with CGI animation.
  • When The Twins are hanging upside down while on a jungle gym in a playground, found in the Courtyard, they both have the same vocal tone as the first Twin.
  • The red buttons, shown when one of The Twins presses the button of sleeping gas, resemble the red buttons layout from "Superbar." Several of these buttons are labeled as "Bad Clams", "Bad", "Hair" and "Nosy." The other three words actually stand for "Bad Karma", "Hairy Hair" and "Nosy Neighbor, which is only shown on an animatic for this episode."
  • This episode marks the second appearance of the Community Showers since "Bunny Love."
  • The real-life man that is dressed up as The Warden at the end of this episode is played by Tim Harrington, the lead singer of Les Savy Fav, an indie rock band from New York City. Tim would reprise The Warden’s role in Cheeseburger’s music video for the intro’s Comin’ Home theme song, which is available as a special feature on the Superjail Season 1 DVD, along with the series’ pilot episode "Bunny Love", and some animatics for the aforementioned pilot episode, "Superbar", this particular episode, and the "Time-Police" two-partner episodes.

Cultural References[]

  • The Warden’s Dream Machine and helmet were inspired by the ‘50s Dr. Seuss film The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T.
  • One of the dream worlds that The Warden travels through is a reference to a lithograph print made by the Dutch artist M.C. Escher titled "Relativity", and the 1945 Hitchcock film Spellbound.
